Improved Flow Cytometry Instruments for Quicker Diagnosis

The photomultiplying tubes within cytometers are programmed to detect the scattering of light at a certain wavelength and match it with excitation levels of cells. Beckman Coulter, one of the biggest manufacturers of life sciences equipment, has launched a new cytometer with options for additional excitation sources in the visible light spectrum. The product, CytoFLEX LX, is compatible with different lasers to detect the light emitted after excitation. This can open up new avenues for testing cell interactions under regular and irregular conditions.

The BD LSRFortessa X-20, a flow cytometer from BD Life Sciences, is a device that can execute multicolor analysis of cells and with the ability to detect nearly 20 parameters concurrently. It has been used in immunophenotyping experiments at Trinity College in Dublin to identify biomarkers successfully. The device is being used to study the immune system in schizophrenic patients.
