Is It Possible to Prolong Lead Acid Battery Life?

Lead acid batteries have a longer lifespan than most of their counterparts. But the toxic and non-recyclable nature of these batteries has forced manufacturers to look for alternative technologies to cater to the rising consumer demand.

AGM - The Future for Lead Acid Battery

Lead batteries can supply large volumes of power despite being lightweight. Various types of lead acid batteries include absorbent glass mat (AGM), valve-regulated lead acid, and gel. AGM batteries are used in electric or hybrid vehicles to support the start-stop functionality of their engines.

AGM batteries are highly popular in Europe due to their conserving nature at traffic signals. They have a spill proof design, low internal resistance, and twice the lifespan of a flooded battery. Recently, Johnson Controls has planned to invest more than USD 400 million to extend its production of AGM batteries. It aims to manufacture 48-volt systems on a mass scale and expand its reach in North America and China, where the company has low penetration.

UltraBattery - A New Technology in Lead Acid Batteries

Researchers at Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) and Ecoult have recently developed an energy storage device, UltraBattery, which combines a battery and a supercapacitor into a single unit. This system can find applications in electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EVs & HEVs) to increase storage capacity and to eliminate concerns of range anxiety. EVs and HEVs contain AGM batteries in order for them to run for a prolonged period. In addition, this battery recorded less sulfation than its carbon-based counterparts.

East Penn Manufacturing, a U.S. battery manufacturer, has recently earned a prestigious award for innovations in lead acid battery products. Its batteries can find applications in electric vehicles, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, and heavy-duty tractors. Its UltraBattery technology has recorded the lowest defect rates in the North American region and has a bright future in electric vehicles.

Market Outlook

According to a report on Radiant Insights, Inc., the worldwide lead acid battery market is projected to attain huge revenue by 2022. It is anticipated to grow at a steady CAGR throughout the forecast period (2012 to 2022). Factors driving growth include adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles, rising urbanization, and technological advancements.

Valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery segment is projected a high demand over the forecast period due to their capacity to function in unpredictable temperatures. Asia Pacific can net an impressive market share in the near future owing to utilization of lead-acid batteries in construction sector. Prominent market players include East Penn Manufacturing, Exide Technologies, NorthStar Battery, and Johnson Controls International Plc
