New Biochar Innovation for Rural Tech Development

Biochar is a carbonized biomass derived from sustainable sources and is mixed into the soil to improve its fertility. Biochar production involves a combination of time, heat, and pressure, each of which differs with the type of feedstock, equipment, and processors. Several other energy products are also derived in the form of oil or gas while obtaining biochar. Biochar can be derived from a variety of biomass materials and hence various production systems emerge on various levels, right from household units to a large-scale bio-energy power plants for commercial purposes.

Gasification and pyrolysis are two major methods of biochar production.
  • Gasification: This process converts organic carbonaceous components into hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. It is done by reacting the raw materials at high temperatures without combustion and with a controlled quantity of oxygen.
  • Pyrolysis: It is a thermo-chemical decomposition of bio-based materials at high temperatures with no oxygen or halogen.

New Biochar Innovation could Help Household Application

A soil expert at the Agriculture and Forestry division of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) is designing a sample stove for households in partnership with the Bataan Peninsula State University. This stove is designed for household use to help them produce their own biochar with locally available waste materials such as plant or agricultural waste. According to the developers, their new, dual-purpose stove burns from approx. 20 to 75 minutes per feedstock load based on the material.
