Diabetic Care Devices – A Viable Solution for Treating Diabetes

Diabetes is reportedly the fourth leading cause of death globally. Europe has close to 60 million people affected with diabetes, with the number purported to grow annually. The Middle East and Africa regions have recently registered a high percentage of the population afflicted with type II diabetes. Diabetic care devices can be used to track hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic levels among patients.

Insulin pumps, insulin syringes, insulin pens, self-monitoring blood glucose meters, continuous glucose meters, lancets, and testing strips are devices used in management of diabetes. Manufacturers of these devices are increasingly improving the technology in order to gain precise results. Merck KGaA has launched a diabetes awareness program in the Middle East, called Merck Capacity Advancement Program, in collaboration with the Emirates Diabetes Society to decrease the prevalence of diabetes in the region.

Diabetes Management Solutions

Insulin pens are used by diabetics for timely delivery of insulin for treating this disease. Novo Nordisk, one of the market players, has expanded its reach in Ghana by launching the Flexpen, an insulin pen. The pen can deliver accurate doses at appropriate times and alleviate the burden on diabetic patients residing in the country.

Due to the prominence of smart technologies, Roche Diagnostics has launched the Accu-Chek Guide System, a blood glucose meter (BGM) that can be used by patients to track blood sugar levels. Medtronic plc, another healthcare solutions provider, has collaborated with Roche to integrate their BGM technology with its proprietary insulin pumps.

Market Outlook

The diabetic care devices market in EMEA is projected to expand at a steady growth rate during the forecast period (2012–2022). Growing cases of diabetes among people in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East regions is a major factor driving market demand. Need for safe and effective methods to deliver drugs or appropriate medicine to control blood sugar levels is also expected to influence market growth. Patent expiration of some devices and changes in regulations are some of the challenges in the market. Awareness of consumers regarding benefits of these devices is predicted to augur product sales.

Key market participants include Johnson & Johnson, Roche Diagnostics, Ypsomed Holding, and Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals LLC.
